Leaving South Korea: What to know

  • Foreigners with a valid passport can freely leave South Korea. However, those suspected of criminal activity may be detained or forcibly expelled.
  • If a foreigner wishes to leave Korea after the expiration of their stay, they must follow a specific procedure at the Immigration Officeclick here for their address.
  • Foreigners leaving Korea permanently must return their foreign resident card.
  • Individuals prohibited from leaving Korea may face restrictions related to their stay or activities in Korea.
  • Foreigners who remain in Korea after their visa expires may be forcibly expelled or subjected to penalties. Those who receive an exit ban can appeal to the Ministry of Justice within 10 days of receiving the order.
